Existing in the current environment, with natural disasters, global conflicts, and general hatred dominating the news, can often feel incredibly overwhelming. It can be easy to feel like the world is burning and there is nothing we can do as individuals to stop it. This feeling of helplessness can compound feelings of stress and anxiety, compromising our ability to take care of ourselves and take action.
Practicing Self-Care
Often, when we hear that we need to practice self-care in the face of these disasters and feelings of impending doom, it can feel, at a minimum, silly, if not out-of-touch. But taking care of ourselves is the most important thing we can do as individuals. We are in no position to start to make a difference if we are drowning under the weight of stress and burnout.
Use therapy. Having someone to talk to about the feelings that come with these difficult times can be incredibly beneficial. Consider learning more about your employer’s employee assistance plan (EAP) if applicable, or seeking a therapist via your health insurance network. There are also some free therapy options available to those with financial constraints.
Take breaks. In the age of constant connection, it can be difficult to disconnect and take a social media break. But taking time to be away from the constant news cycle is an important method of self-care. This time can include going for a walk, spending time with family and friends, or reading a book.
Practicing Community Care
Self-care is essential to ensure you are healthy and happy. The next step in times of turmoil and crisis is to practice community care. What's important to remember when you take these actions is that you can’t save the world on your own, but you can make an impact. You can take action in order to not feel helpless and to make a difference, even if it is small.
Vote. This is one of the most important and impactful actions we can take as Americans. Learn more about both the national election and the local elections that will be on your ballot. Take the time to research candidates, using a variety of sources, and learn more about their positions on the issues that are important to you.
Donate. If you are able, donating your time or financial support to causes that are meaningful to you will have an impact. You can also donate to campaigns or candidates who are advocating for change that you support. Volunteering for organizations or campaigns is a great way to take action and connect with your community as well.
It is easy to feel helpless in times of worldwide strife and chaos. But there are several steps you can take, both for yourself and for your community, to avoid feelings of helplessness and increase care and connection. Remember that only together can we create a more equitable and inclusive world.
