What Can the Olympics Teach Us About DEI?

In the past few weeks, we’ve seen the Olympics wrap up and the Paralympics kick-off. These events are full of joyful moments and brutal defeats, which are captivating to watch as spectators but also come with valuable lessons, especially in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) at work.

1. Inclusion Fosters Unity

The Olympics are a celebration of humanity's collective spirit. Athletes often talk about how they feel a part of something bigger than themselves—a global community. This sense of belonging is what inclusion in the workplace is all about. By fostering an inclusive environment, where every voice is heard and valued, companies can build stronger, more cohesive teams. Just as the Olympic Games bring together people from all walks of life, an inclusive workplace unites employees, creating a culture of mutual respect and collaboration.

2. Resilience and Perseverance

The stories of Olympic athletes often include overcoming adversity, whether it’s injury, personal challenges, or societal barriers. For example, Simone Biles returned to the Games after having to leave the 2020 events in Tokyo for a mental health crisis. She came out on top, earning three gold medals and a silver in her return.

This is just one example of the tales of resilience and perseverance that offer a powerful lesson for workplaces: individuals are resilient but they also need support. Equity means ensuring everyone has a chance to overcome barriers and have an equal chance at success. By providing support for individuals in your organization, you can lay the groundwork for their resilience and success.

3. The Importance of a Global Perspective

The global nature of the Olympics reminds us of the importance of considering multiple perspectives in our approach to DEI. In a globally connected world, businesses benefit from understanding and integrating diverse viewpoints. This global perspective not only enhances decision-making but also enables companies to better serve a diverse customer base.

4. Embracing Authenticity

At the Olympics, we see individuals expressing their authentic selves in so many ways, including how they style their hair and nails, how they prepare for their sport, and how they celebrate their victories. This authenticity is not only interesting to witness but shines a light on the importance of allowing individuals to bring their full selves to their work. If individuals on the biggest stage are given the freedom to be themselves, why can’t the individuals in your organization?

The Olympics provide a unique lens through which we can view the importance of DEI in the workplace. By embracing these principles, organizations can create an environment where everyone can excel, just as athletes do on the world’s biggest stage. Let the Olympic spirit guide us in our journey toward a more inclusive and equitable workplace.
